Robert Menendez thinks the Cuban government planted evidence that he partied with underage prostitutes, and the New Jersey senator is asking the Justice Department to look into his claims, reports the Washington Post. Menendez, known as a vocal Castro critic, alleges that plot was timed to put a wrench in his 2012 re-election campaign; his lawyer calls it "deeply disturbing" that an American "enemy" would "influence US foreign policy by discrediting an elected official." It's just the latest controversy swirling around the Democrat: Justice has been investigating Menendez to see if he used his Senate position to benefit a wealthy donor—and Menendez has openly told the AP that he supported the creation of a fake Cuban Twitter to undermine the Cuban government.

Per the Post, US officials have intel indicating Havana created a fake tipster named "Pete Williams" to claim Menendez had romped in "poolside sex parties" with underage prostitutes in the Dominican Republic. In November 2012, the Daily Caller posted a video of two women with their faces obscured, claiming that Menendez arranged to pay them $500 to perform sex acts at a ritzy Dominican resort—and then stiffed them and gave them $100 each. One of the women later recanted and said the two were paid to frame Menendez. The evidence against Cuba includes IP addresses linking Cuban intelligence agents to the prostitution claims and the fact that independent investigations haven’t turned up any evidence of Menendez with prostitutes of any age—or of a credible link between the tipster’s emails and a real Pete Williams.
