Phil Takes Control in LA

(Newser) – Phil Mickelson moved much closer yesterday to taming the only West Coast city that has eluded him in his career, reports the AP. Mickelson shot a 7-under 64 to build a four-shot lead in the Northern Trust Open in Los Angeles. "The West Coast means a lot to me,'' he said after his best round ever at Riviera.

Mickelson lost the tournament in a playoff last year. Robert Allensby shot a 66 to hang on to second with 36 holes left. "I've made plenty of birdies here before, so there's no reason why I can't do it on the weekend," Allensby said. Mickelson and Allensby both played in the morning before winds and rain hampered play.
