Reno Cops Hunt Murderous Serial Rapist

Linked to attacks on 3 women near local campus

(Newser) – A murdered 19-year-old Reno woman is believed to be the third victim of a serial rapist preying on women near the local campus of the University of Nevada, reports the Reno Gazette. The woman was abducted from a friend's home and strangled. "This is a serial rapist," said a police official. "We have two, probably three cases linked through DNA."

The latest victim is the first woman killed in the attacks. The other crimes were sexual assaults only—one in a building where campus security park their cars. Police say the assailant is probably a local man, and sought the public's help in identifying him. "I'm worried this guy is still out there," said the official.

(NEWSER) - Los Angeles police say a 72-year-old insurance claims adjuster may in fact be the city's "most prolific serial killer," the Los Angeles Times reports. The suspect, John Floyd Thomas, may have killed up to 30 older women and raped scores more during two separate rampages in the 1970s and 1980s, police say. He has been charged with two murders, and newly examined DNA evidence has linked him to three others so far. More»

(NEWSER) - A serial killer on Death Row is giving up the locations of the bodies of up to 20 people he killed—for the tidy sum of $33,000, reports the LA Times . Convicted murderer Wesley Shermantine drew maps of two dumping grounds after he was paid by a Sacramento bounty hunter to reveal where he and his partner hid their victims' bodies from a drug-fueled murder spree that began in the mid-1980s and lasted more than a decade. "We have information that we may have 10 to 20 bodies in that well," said an investigator yesterday, referring to a farmland site identified by Shermantine. More»

Lawyers: John Wayne Gacy Had Accomplice

They cite evidence suggesting the serial killer had help

(NEWSER) - John Wayne Gacy had help abducting and killing at least some of his victims, and one or more accomplices may still be at large, say two criminal defense attorneys who reviewed the cases. The attorneys tell the Chicago Sun-Times that it seems unlikely Gacy could have killed at least three of his 29 victims, based on his travel and work records. For example, police think one Gacy victim was abducted in Chicago on the afternoon of Sept 15, 1977, but the attorneys unearthed a plane ticket showing Gacy was in Pittsburgh on that day. More»

Itzcoatl Ocampo to be charged with stabbing Raquel Estrada, Juan Herrera

(NEWSER) - Authorities believe Itzcoatl Ocampo, the 23-year-old Iraq veteran charged with stabbing four homeless men to death in California, also killed two other people—ones that he knew. Ocampo will be charged today with the murders of Raquel Estrada, 53, and her 34-year-old son, Juan Herrera, the mother and brother of a friend Ocampo has known since high school. That friend, Eder Herrera, had originally been charged with the murders, but those charges were dropped Friday, CNN reports. More»
