Now that people with enhanced permits can carry concealed weapons on school campuses in Idaho, a professor at Idaho State University has taken the opportunity to shoot himself in the foot. Literally, and apparently by accident. The instructor was teaching chemistry on Tuesday when his small-caliber handgun, which Local News 8 reports was concealed in his pants pocket, fired into his foot. He didn't require an ambulance to get to the hospital, where he was treated and released. It's not yet clear why the gun went off.

The professor, whose name has yet to be released, technically committed a misdemeanor by discharging the firearm within city limits, but police say they're waiting to complete the investigation before filing any charges. "I'm glad he shot himself and nobody else," one student who supports the enhanced permit law, which went into effect July 1, tells the Idaho State Journal. "It's unfortunate," ISU President Arthur Vailas adds. "I'm sure the incident was scary and embarrassing. ... When they passed this law, it was bound to happen." (At least the consequences were less deadly than when this man tried, and failed, to show his girlfriend how safe his guns were.)
