Street Sense Wins Derby

Posted May 5, 07 6:44 PM CDT in US Sports

(Newser) – Street Sense surged from 19th in a field of 20 to win today's 133rd Kentucky Derby, returning $11.80 as the tepid favorite and ending two long-standing jinxes. The dark bay colt was the first-ever Breeder's Cup Juvenile winner and the first 2-year-old champion since Spectacular Bid in 1979 to triumph in the Derby.

Jockey Calvin Borel, nicknamed "Bo-rail," lived up to his reputation and skimmed the fence en route to his first Derby crown in five tries. The 40-year-old wept as he simply said, "It's unbelievable." The crowd of 156,635 was the third-largest in Derby history and included Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip.
