Mayweather Outpoints De La Hoya

Posted May 6, 07 12:33 AM CDT in Sports

(Newser) – Floyd Mayweather Jr. captured Oscar De La Hoya's WBC super welterweight title last night in Las Vegas, recording a 12-round split decision and running his record to 38-0.  Two of the three judges gave one of the richest fights in boxing history to the 3-2 underdog, who has won a belt in five different weight classes.

The fight drew a sellout crowd of 17,000 that focused its Cinco de Mayo revelry on rooting for the Mexican-American De La Hoya (38-5). Mayweather played to the spectators by wearing a sombrero into the ring, but they booed when the decision was announced. De La Hoya's consolation was a $25 million payday, to Mayweather's $10 million.
