Rocket Returns to the Bronx

Posted May 6, 07 9:45 PM CDT in Sports

(Newser) – Roger Clemens announced on Sunday to an ecstatic crowd at Yankee Stadium that he'd be joining New York this year. The news is well-timed for the best-paid team in baseball, which has suffered a catastrophic string of pitching injuries. Two of his other previous teams, Boston and Houston, had also been bidding to sign him.

The enigmatic hurler pitched for New York from 1999 to 2003, amassing two championship rings and one Cy Young award. He expects to join the Yankees in about a month.  The deal will give the 44-year-old an appalling $28 million for less than a year of work.  Said Clemens:  "It's a privilege to be back."
