Police say a man who thought he was breaking into a Vermont school actually got into the local police station. Police say the man, identified as 59-year-old John Dettor, used a traffic cone to break the glass to get into the police station in Shelburne just before midnight on Thursday, thinking it was a school. He quickly realized his mistake, reports the Green Mountain Outlook, which notes that the police station is housed in the old "Village School."

Shelburne police say a single officer was in the building at the time, along with an emergency dispatcher. After hearing glass break, a patrol officer searching the perimeter found Dettor hiding in a bush. WFFF-TV reports that Dettor told police he wanted a warm place to stay. He was arrested on suspicion of unlawful mischief and pleaded not guilty in district court in Burlington the next morning, reports the Free Press. (More weird crimes stories.)
