Police say the man, identified as 59-year-old John Dettor, used a traffic cone to break the glass to get into the police station in Shelburne just before midnight on Thursday, thinking it was a school. He quickly realized his mistake, reports the Green Mountain Outlook, which notes that the police station is housed in the old "Village School." Shelburne police say a single officer was in the building at the time, along with an emergency dispatcher. After hearing glass break, a patrol officer searching the perimeter found Dettor hiding in a bush. WFFF-TV reports that Dettor told police he wanted a warm place to stay. He was arrested on suspicion of unlawful mischief and pleaded not guilty in district court in Burlington the next morning, reports the Free Press.
