CIA: Rendition Flights Landed in UK Territory

Posted Feb 21, 08 2:17 PM CST in World

(Newser) – Two US flights carrying terror suspects for interrogation abroad—a practice known as extraordinary rendition—landed on British territory in 2002, confirmed CIA Director Michael Hayden today. Though the UK previously denied such landings, Foreign Secretary David Miliband admitted planes refueled on the Indian Ocean island of Diego Garcia, reports the BBC, a fact revealed in a recent search of US records.

Miliband said he was sorry to have to correct denials that had been made in “good faith.” But there was widespread concern about the cases in the British government. “It was unfortunate it happened without us knowing that it had happened,” said Prime Minister Gordon Brown, who added that it was important to ensure it would not happen again.
