A 29-year-old Swedish model is brain-dead after a bus hit her as she rode her bicycle on New York's Roosevelt Island, and her family says her chances for a recovery are grim. Anna Maria Mostrom fell when the bus hit her while making a left turn Wednesday night, according to the New York Daily News. "She was rammed," her father reportedly told a Swedish newspaper, "and the damage was so severe that she is brain-dead. We can hope for a miracle, but the doctors said there is no realistic chance."

A friend says the family is preparing to donate Mostrom's organs. Her career was launched when she competed on the Scandinavian version of Next Top Model in 2005; she has lived in New York for the past two years. No charges have been made in the crash, though according to Streetsblog NYC, the NYPD says the bus's "failure to yield" is to blame. Mostrom was riding northbound, and the 51-year-old driver was going south when he allegedly turned left across her path. According to the New York Post, Mostrom was not wearing a helmet. It's not clear whether she was using nighttime lights, notes Streetsblog NYC, as required by New York law. (More bicycle stories.)
