(Newser) – Cody McLeod put an end to a long evening for the Colorado Avalanche and the Phoenix Coyotes last night. Fortunately for him, his goal in the 12th round of a shootout sent his Avalanche home happy, reports the AP. "I just wanted to hit the net," said McLeod, who beat Mikael Tellqvist.

The game was the longest shootout ever for both teams. "I've witnessed a couple of those on TV but in person it's tough on the system," Colorado coach Joel Quenneville said. Paul Stastny and Marek Svatos scored the Colorado goals in the regulation as the Avs snapped a five-game winless streak.
