It's time to raid your grandma's closet for all those bauble-covered holiday jumpers, because ugly Christmas sweaters are the coolest thing in festive fashion—and a booming business. Not only do many retailers carry the hideous getups—sometimes with a hefty price tag—the sweaters have their own holiday: National Ugly Christmas Sweater Day, celebrated on the second or third Friday of December, Businessweek reports. "I've never seen a product or category blow up like this," says a rep for a company that makes do-it-yourself sweater kits. "Competition picks up every year," adds the founder of UltimateUglyChristmas.com. "But so does demand."
Stores like Walmart and Target are selling their own ugly sweaters, while a single sports memorabilia company hopes to nab $10 million in profit selling 300,000 sweaters emblazoned with football team logos at $59.99 a pop. One entrepreneur, who started adding ugly additions to thrift store sweaters back in 2008, says her eBay sweater sales have put her two sons through college. "I've sold about 25,000 and certainly made over a million dollars in revenue," she says. In the market for a sweater?
