DNC to File Campaign Fund Complaint Against McCain

Posted Feb 25, 08 7:07 AM CST in Politics

(Newser) – The Democratic National Committee will file an FEC complaint today against John McCain, accusing the likely GOP nominee of violating policy when he obtained campaign loans by promising to repay them with federal funds, the Washington Post reports. The FEC so far hasn't granted McCain's request to now opt out of the public matching funds system.

“This is a classic example of someone who talks one way and does the other,” said DNC chairman Howard Dean. McCain’s spokesman accused Dean of “breathtaking” hypocrisy because Dean "withdrew from the matching funds system exactly the same way" during his failed presidential bid. If McCain sticks with public funding, his spending, which has already topped $49 million, would be capped at $54 million until September.
