St. Mary's defeated San Diego 61-54 to avenge the Gaels' only conference loss of the season. The fiercely fought victory gives the No. 25 team at least the second seed, and two valuable byes, in next month's WCC championship. The win almost didn't happen, however—four consecutive late turnovers almost let the Toreros slip past, reports the San Francisco Chronicle.
Diamon Simpson's 15 points and 11 rebounds gave him his third straight double-double for St. Mary's, and Tron Smith added 15 more off the bench. But missed free throws by the Gaels and a 10-2 San Diego run late in the second half cut the lead to as few as three points before St. Mary's managed to regroup and secure the game.
