Ty Conklin had a career-best 50 saves in the Pittsburgh Penguins 4-2 victory over the New York Islanders. Jeff Taffe had a goal and an assist for the Penguins, who were short several men because of blockbuster trade. Pittsburgh made the biggest move at the deadline by acquiring star forward Marian Hossa from Atlanta, according to the Associated Press. Elsewhere in the NHL:

  • An overtime goal by the Carolina Hurricanes’ Sergei Samsonov gave the New Jersey Devils a 2-1 loss and snapped their five-game winning streak. It was Samsonov’s second goal of the game.
  • Brooks Laich scored two goals and also had two assists in the Washington Capital’s 4-1 victory over the Minnesota Wild. The win snapped a three-game skid.
