Thousands of flights in the Northeast have already been canceled for today and tomorrow as dire warnings about a coming blizzard pile up, and some 30 million people hunker down, reports NPR. Some 2,000 flights have been canceled for today, with another 1,800 nixed for tomorrow, FlightAware.com reports. Another 2,200 have been delayed today so far. United has canceled all its flights at major New York, Boston, and Philadelphia airports for tomorrow, CNN reports. Top airlines are dropping fees for rebooking. Amtrak, however, is currently planning a normal schedule for today—though that could change. In New York state, some public transportation could be closed today; the same could be true for major roads like I-84 and the Long Island Expressway, CNN reports. New York City could see the worst of the storm, especially in the suburbs, where snow could reach 30 inches, Reuters reports. Gov. Andrew Cuomo has urged people to work from home today.

Of particular concern are high winds, gusting between 55mph and 65 mph, which are expected to affect visibility. "This is not one of those storms you want to go out in while it's happening," a CNN meteorologist says. "You want to wait for the winds to die down ... before you go to the store." Meanwhile, NBC News has a number of other tips to help you prepare. Among them:

  • In case there are issues with your water supply, you should have three quarts of water per person per day at the ready.
  • Keep three days of non-perishable food around in case you lose electricity.
  • Remember to refill any prescriptions, since pharmacies could close; a first-aid kit is also important.
