It's not everyone who could get away with calling the judge "sweetheart" in court, but 80-year-old Dolores Sheinis pulled it off with aplomb in Florida's Broward County. Sheinis was in court on charges of violating an injunction to stay away from her ex-husband—it's complicated; they've been divorced for 31 years but live in the same apartment, reports Local 10—and Judge John Hurley made her promise to be good from now on (with help from a GPS ankle bracelet). Some highlights from their exchanges, from the TV station and NBC Miami:

  • Hurley: "Ma'am, have you ever thought of doing a stand-up routine?"
  • Sheinis: "If you pay me good money, sweetheart, I'll be there. I'm really short of funds."

  • Hurley: "I haven't been called 'sweetheart' in this courtroom since I guess Mr. Miller took over."
  • Sheinis: "Does that mean you're taking me for breakfast?"
  • Hurley: "Let me ask you something, ma'am. How have I done as a judge today? So far, how am I doing?"
  • Sheinis: "Not bad, but you could do better."
  • Hurley: "I've got to tell you, you've brightened my day, ma'am."
  • Sheinis: "That's what the last guy said, and then he sued me."
