FBI Begins Clemens Probe

Posted Feb 28, 08 5:59 PM CST in Sports    Most Covered

(newser) – The FBI today began investigating whether Roger Clemens committed perjury when he told Congress that he never used performance-enhancing drugs, Bloomberg reports. The agency opened a preliminary review one day after a House panel told the Justice Department it suspected Clemens of lying. The pitcher insists he never took steroids or human growth hormone, but his former trainer says otherwise.

"We've always expected they would open an investigation," said Clemens' top lawyer. "They attended the congressional hearing. So what's new?" Clemens' friend and former teammate, Andy Pettitte, also told Congress that Clemens used performance-enhancers, but the seven-time Cy Young winner says Pettitte simply "misremembers" their conversations. The feds also continue to probe into whether shortstop Miguel Tejada lied to lawmakers in 2005.
