Pelosi Threatens Bush Lawsuit

Posted May 9, 07 8:54 AM CDT in US Politics

(Newser) – Nancy Pelosi says the House could sue President Bush if he tries to circumvent provisions in its new Iraq appropriations bill. Bush has suggested he'll append a signing statement to the bill, a controversial practice that could let him treat parts of the law—like timetables on progress in Iraq—as optional.

If that happens, the speaker said, "We can take the president to court." Legislators sued  Nixon over the bombing of Cambodia, The Hill explains, but a court threw out the suit. Now Dems are searching for ways to keep pressure on for ending the war. Sen. Carl Levin predicts the odds are good for a signing statement, and an ensuing showdown.
