An Atlanta-area teenager who sought a second chance—and a new heart—less than two years ago is dead after a car chase and an alleged crime spree. Anthony Stokes was 15 and already had a history of run-ins with the law in August 2013 when he received a heart transplant, NBC News reports. The Children's Healthcare of Atlanta hospital initially refused to put him on the transplant list despite his failing heart, citing behavioral problems and a "history of noncompliance" with doctors' orders, but it relented after the case sparked a national outcry, with activists calling the decision a "death sentence" for the teen, the New York Daily News reports.
According to a police incident report, Stokes, 17, died on Tuesday night when he lost control of a Honda Accord while fleeing police, the AP reports. A pedestrian was injured. Police say the vehicle was reported stolen in a carjacking earlier that day, and they believe Stokes used it to escape after shooting at an 81-year-old woman during a break-in before the crash, NBC reports. In 2013, Stokes told WSB he believed the transplant would help him change his ways. "So I can live a second chance. Get a second chance and do things I want to do," he said.
