It may be tongue in cheek, but it sure is a talker: Brian Beutler of the New Republic lays out his Swiftian "modest proposal" that Hillary Clinton should make Barack Obama her running mate. The idea is that it would help a white woman pushing 70 attract the young and minority voters that propelled Obama into office and kept him there. And that matter of the Constitution preventing a two-termer from being president again? A mere technicality—the law says nobody can be elected more than twice, nothing about taking over via the vice president's job.

Something similar came up during Hillary's last run, notes Beutler, when rumors were buzzing that she might pick her husband. But Bill himself publicly put the notion to rest on Letterman by arguing it would violate the spirit, if not the letter, of the law. Still, Hillary has to break with Bill on something, so "why not her running mate?" It would surely lead to a court challenge, writes Beutler: "Reince Priebus v. Barack Obama would become the Bush v. Gore of our time, except in this instance, the Court wouldn't be able to frustrate the will of the voters outright." Click for the full column. (More Hillary Clinton 2016 stories.)
