Which Hopeful Is Greenest?

(Newser) – Primary voters who lean green can go with "visionary" Barack Obama or policy whiz Hillary Clinton, writes Brendan I. Koerner in Slate—both are good. Each offers a cap-and-trade system to cut carbon to 80% below 1990 levels by 2050, and both want to make 25% of energy renewable by 2025. "Neither is perfect, given their knee-jerk affinity for biofuels and clean coal, but such is the nature of politics," Koerner writes.

Hillary is harder on energy companies, and plans to cull $50 billion from “windfall-profits fees” and taxes. Obama is more focused on biofeuls and rouses greater moral indignation on green issues. As for John McCain, he gets a C-minus to his rivals' Bs: His vague platform is only “mildly green," writes Koerner.
