Alex Rodriguez has homered for his 3,000th career hit, becoming just the 29th major league player to reach the milestone. The Yankees star connected tonight at Yankee Stadium in the first inning on his first pitch from Detroit ace Justin Verlander. The crowd erupted as the ball sailed into the seats in right field. And the Yankees, who have been reluctant to celebrate A-Rod's milestones in the wake of his yearlong drug suspension, even flashed a congratulatory message on the big screen, notes ESPN.

Rodriguez turns 40 next month. The three-time AL MVP has enjoyed a resurgent year as a designated hitter after missing last year. Rodriguez became the first player in the big leagues to get 3,000 hits since Yankees great Derek Jeter homered from the very same batter's box in 2011. (More Alex Rodriguez stories.)
