GoFundWhat? Dylann Roof's sister had to call off her wedding when her brother allegedly massacred nine people at Charleston's Emanuel AME Church—and she sought donations to cover the cost. A now-deleted GoFundMe page called "A Fresh Start for Michael and Amber" had a target of $5,000 to "cover lost wedding costs, to pay bills, and to send us on our dream honeymoon," the Post and Courier reports. Amber Roof, 27, had been scheduled to marry Army recruiter Michael Nye on June 21, four days after the Charleston shooting. On the page, she says it was meant to be her dream day, but it "was full of sorrow, pain, and shame, tainted by the actions of one man."

"We cancelled our wedding to protect our family and mourn the lives of those lost," wrote Roof, who, according to some reports, was the family member who called police when she recognized her brother's photo. "Money cannot replace the wedding we lost and our perfect day, however it will help us to create new memories and a new start with our new family," she says, pledging to give 10% of the donated funds to Emanuel AME Church. The page had raised around $1,700 by yesterday afternoon, when it was shut down after it was publicized on a Charleston TV station and numerous commenters called the fundraising an incredibly crass move, the New York Daily News reports. A GoFundMe spokeswoman tells NBC Roof will still be able to access the funds that were raised. (More Dylann Roof stories.)
