Georgetown Win Clinches Big East

(Newser) – John Thompson III accomplished something today his father never did – he led Georgetown to consecutive Big East regular season titles. The 11th-ranked Hoyas battled No. 12 Louisville and hung on to win in the final minute of the game, 55-52. Georgetown, winners of five straight, head to MSG next week as the No. 1 seed in their conference tournament. Elsewhere in the AP Top 25:

  • Vanderbilt lost out on an SEC tournament bye with an overtime loss to Alabama, 78-73.  The 16th-ranked Commodores finish the regular season 25-6, tying the school record in wins, reports the AP.
  • Wisconsin clinched the Big Ten regular-season title, beating Northwestern 65-52.  Brian Butch led the Badgers with 20 points and tied his career-high with 14 rebounds.

    It took a baby hook from Tyler Hansbrough with only seconds left in regulation for No.5 North Carolina to escape the determined Cavaliers last night, 75-74.   • Vanderbilt Beats South Carolina in Last Second

    Shan Foster led the way with 21 points, but it was Jermaine Beal who saved day today for No. 23 Vanderbilt. Beal drove the length of the court and hit a short fadeaway with 0.6 left to lift the Commodores to a 66-65 SEC win over South Carolina today, reports the Associated Press.
