(Newser) – Three people were hospitalized last night after a ceiling collapsed amid smoke and water streaming from up high at the legendary Minneapolis nightclub where Prince filmed part of his 1984 rock drama Purple Rain, the Star Tribune reports. In what First Avenue GM Nate Kranz calls a "terrible surprise," a concert by Canadian band Theory of a Deadman was halted and 1,000 patrons were evacuated when a 30-by-30-foot section of the ceiling went down at the back of the dance floor around 10pm.

"A large portion of the ceiling fell and took out water pipes with it," he tells the paper, which reports that firefighters were "evaluating the integrity of the building." "We have no idea why or how it happened." The club will be closed today so investigators can figure out what happened. A hospital spokeswoman says the three injured are in satisfactory condition with non-life-threatening injuries. (Prince recently recorded a protest song inspired by Freddie Gray.)
