Penguins win on fluke goal while Jackets keep slim playoff hopes alive

(Newser) – Rangers goalie Henrik Lundqvist earned his eighth shutout this season and was one shot better than his counterpart, Boston's Alex Auld, as New York won 1-0 in the shootout. Nigel Dawes, fast becoming the Rangers' shootout specialist, scored for the third time in four games to move his team into sixth in the East, one point ahead of Boston, writes AP. Elsewhere:

Washington's Nicklas Backstrom inadvertently scored the winning goal against his own team with 32 seconds remaining, as Pittsburgh stole one from the Capitals. Sidney Crosby, credited with the winner, had two goals.
Columbus snapped a seven-game home winless streak and scored its first power play goal in 35 chances during a 5-3 win over Tampa Bay.

(NEWSER) - Buffalo’s playoff hopes remain alive – for at least one more day. The Sabres, battling every step of the way, overcame the Bruins in a 2-1 overtime win tonight. (NEWSER) - The New York Rangers re-discovered their stifling defense and held the Pittsburgh Penguins to only five shots through two periods, and 18 total, en route to a 4-0 victory. New York had surrendered 24 goals in their previous six games and compiled a 1-4-1 record during those contests. Scott Gomez led the Rangers’ offense with two goals, reports the AP. More»
