Spitzer Apologizes; Caught on Wiretap in Prostitution Probe

Posted Mar 10, 08 2:37 PM CDT in Politics US

(Newser) – In a brief press conference, New York Gov. Eliot Spitzer this afternoon apologized to his family and to the public, "whom I've promised better" for failing "to live up to the standards I set for myself."  The former attorney general is reportedly identified as Client 9 in a federal wiretap investigation that brought down a high-end prostitution ring called the Emperors Club VIP last week.

Client 9 was recorded, the New York Times reports, confirming plans for a woman to travel from New York City  to Washington, DC, to meet him in a hotel room. "I have acted in a way that violates my obligations to my family and violates my or any sense of right and wrong," Spitzer said. He did not explain what he was apologizing for, or make any comment about his political future.
