What's Next for Spitzer?

(Newser) – Amid reports that Eliot Spitzer has been caught on a wiretap in a prostitution investigation, stunned political bloggers are speculating on whether the New York governor will resign, parsing how we got here—and where we go:

  • Politicians have outlived sex scandals in the past, writes Mark Silva, but “so much of Spitzer’s persona is invested in his own enforcement of the law,” and politics is “unforgiving of hypocrisy.” There’s no resignation yet, but New Yorkers should start reading up on their lieutenant governor.

  • Josh Marshall is “frankly shocked” that the guv’s enemies “didn’t smoke him out before this”—especially considering all the private eyes in the rollodexes of Spitzer-hating Wall Streeters. Marshall is offended by the hypocrisy, too: “I never cease to be amazed by stuff like this.”
  • Steve Benen calls talk of resignation “premature,” and notes that “a partisan” might respond by pointing to Rudy Giuliani’s survival of multiple mistress scandals. But the bottom line: “It's hard to believe brilliant people in positions of responsibility could be this stupid and this self-destructive.”
