Spitzer's Fall Shocks Biographer

(Newser) – Eliot Spitzer's biographer was as shocked as anyone to discover his involvement with a prostitution ring yesterday. The New York governor was regarded as a devoted and faithful husband, and his college girlfriends still spoke fondly of him. The whole debacle, writes Brooke Masters in the Financial Times, "serves as a shocking reminder that even the most public figures can have unexpected facets."

Resignation is imminent for a man who "had been so much of a Boy Scout that he still had some wild oats to sow." But Masters reiterates that, since his election by a record-breaking majority, Spitzer had not been the most impressive of governors. He was implicated in a scandal in which aides were accused of leaning on the police to gather opposition research.
