20 Dead in Pakistan Blasts

Posted Mar 11, 08 4:54 AM CDT in World

(Newser) – Two suicide explosions killed at least 20 people in Lahore early today, Reuters reports. One bomb devastated the city's federal police headquarters. "We're trying to evacuate the wounded trapped under the debris," said an official. The second blast occurred when two men blew themselves up in a pickup truck outside a house, killing two children and wounding at least 60 other people.

The second explosion happened near the home of Asif Ali Zardari, the widower of assassinated former prime minister Benazir Bhutto. More than 500 people have been killed so far this year in suicide bombs across Pakistan blamed on Islamic militants. President Pervez Musharraf, whose political foes have announced that they will form a coalition government,  condemned the attacks, calling them a "scourge."
