Come Clean or Quit; Maybe Both

(Newser) – As Eliot Spitzer mulls his options, the editorial boards of the state's newspapers are weighing in:

  • Wall Street Journal: "The stupendously deluded belief that the sitting governor of New York could purchase the services of prostitutes was the last act of a man unable to admit the existence of, or need for, limits."

  • New York Times: "His short, arrogant statement was not enough. Mr. Spitzer did not seem to understand what he owed the public—a strong argument for why he should be trusted again."
  • Westchester Journal News: "Long after Eliot Spitzer has called a merciful end to his brief and failed governorship, we will wonder how it was that the Sheriff of Wall Street turned out to be such a complete and utter dunce."
  • Glens Falls Post Star: "In one day, he went from Governor Steamroller to Client 9, from prospective presidential candidate to Jay Leno's dream joke."
