NY GOP Threatens Impeachment

Posted Mar 11, 08 11:18 AM CDT in Politics

(Newser) – If Eliot Spitzer doesn’t resign, state Republicans will impeach him. Assemblyman James Tedisco says he’s asked the governor to step down within 48 hours, CBS 2 in New York reports, adding, “I think that’s plenty of time.” Spitzer is currently holed up with his advisors discussing his options, but aides tell the Albany Times-Union they expect a resignation.

Lt. Gov. David Paterson is already preparing to take over, aides say. Paterson, who would be New York’s first black governor, is popular with both parties. But some experts say Spitzer should think long and hard before resigning. “This is one of the most intelligent, brightest elected officials in the region,” said one consultant. “You don’t change governors of New York lightly.”
