70% of New Yorkers Want Spitzer to Resign

(Newser) – New Yorkers want embattled Gov. Eliot Spitzer to resign from office—or they’ll throw him out, reports the AP. A poll yesterday found 70% of state residents want Spitzer to quit; if he doesn’t, 66% say he should be impeached. "It's a big thumbs down," said pollster Lee Miringoff, director of the Marist College Institute for Public Opinion.

Since a brief Monday apology, Spitzer hasn’t talked to the media, remaining with his family in their New York City apartment. Republicans have had plenty to say, demanding he leave office. Democrats, meanwhile, have remained largely mum. Spitzer—who had a reputation as a straight arrow—stands accused of spending up to $80,000 patronizing high-priced hookers.

The sexual encounters, costing as much as $80,000 in cash, unfolded in hotels in Washington, Florida and elsewhere.
