(Newser) – An al-Qaeda umbrella group claims it kidnapped the three US soldiers missing since Saturday. Thousands of troops continue to sweep the area south of Baghdad dubbed the Triangle of Death for their comrades, who disappeared in an ambush that killed four other solders. The so-called Islamic State of Iraq offered no proof for the claim.

The announcement followed one of the bloodiest days in Iraq in weeks; at least 124 people were killed. A truck bomb exploded in the offices of a Kurdish political party, killing 50, and a car bomb in a Baghdad market claimed another 17.
