Villanova Tops Syracuse in Big East Tourney

West Virginia holds on against Providence, Pitt downs Cincinnati

(Newser) – Villanova used a strong second-half effort to blow past Syracuse 82-63 in the first round of the Big East tournament. The Wildcats made eight of their first nine 3-pointers after the break and went on an 11-1 run midway through the second half to put the game out of the Orange’s reach. The loss almost certainly bursts Syracuse’s bubble, reports the Philadelphia Inquirer. Elsewhere in the Big East Tournament:

Joe Alexander scored 22 points and led West Virginia to a 58-53 opening round victory over Providence. The Mountaineers will face fourth-seeded Connecticut.

Pittsburgh continued its strong play in the Big East tournament in recent years with a 70-64 win over Cincinnati. The Panthers have reached six of the last seven tournament finals.

Underdog Wildcats roar back from 16 down to beat Georgetown

(NEWSER) - Davidson star Stephen Curry had no touch early in his team's second round game against Georgetown, the AP reports. The sophomore guard missed 10 of his first 12, and the Hoyas climbed to a dominating lead. But Curry would not be denied, erupting for 25 of his 30 points in the second half and leading underdog Davidson from 16 behind with 15 minutes to play for an improbable 74-70 victory. More»

(NEWSER) - Villanova made it look easy today, the Philadelphia Inquirer reports. Never trailing after a dominant start, the Wildcats notched their third Sweet 16 appearance in four years with an 84-72 triumph over Siena in the Midwest regional's second round. Scottie Reynolds made his presence felt early, netting 15 points in the first 10 minutes for Villanova, and finishing with 25 points and eight rebounds. More»

As Brook Lopez saves the day with last second shot

(NEWSER) - Stanford's coach Trent Johnson has a lot to thank Brook Lopez for, the AP reports. With Johnson ejected for after consecutive technical fouls in the first half, Lopez took the reins on the court, bruising Marquette's hopes to the tune of 30 points, including the game-winning shot with 1.3 seconds remaining in OT to give Stanford the 82-81 victory.
