In-N-Out Burger Clogs Neighbors' Arteries

Posted Mar 14, 08 6:25 PM CDT in US Arts & Living

(Newser) – In-N-Out Burger's customers aren’t “in and out” as fast as its Southern California neighbors would like. Businesses near some oversubscribed locations are frustrated at drive-through lines that block their own entrances and exits—and some are ready to sue, the Los Angeles Times reports. “We've lost a lot of customers because they can't get in,” says one Quizno's manager.

Fans say the grilled-to-order burgers are worth the wait—but a potential traffic citation? “We can't write tickets because someone is sitting in their car waiting to turn into a driveway,” one officer said after an irate baker demanded action. In-N-Out says it plans to open more eateries and station more employees outdoors with hand-held terminals to speed things up.

In-N-Out burgers aren't grilled until they're ordered, which is why some customers are willing to wait in drive-through lines up to 45 minutes long.   ((c) XP-ert)

The Irvine-based In-N-Out franchise started out with two-lane burger stands with no indoor seating. Today that has changed as the popularity has increased.   ((c) Mulling it Over)
