  1. Find no-cost entertainment, like free days at museums or public concerts.
  2. Use a credit card or get cash from an ATM for the best exchange rates and lower fees.
  3. Haggle, especially at outdoor markets or street vendors.

  1. Forget the rental car; use public transportation.
  2. Consider buying a rail pass, and take the overnight train to save a night's lodging.
  3. Make lunch your big meal: You'll typically find the same dishes at half the price.
  4. Forget what you know about tipping: In Europe, 10% is the norm.
  5. Order the house wine. It's cheaper, and you'll be surprised at how good it is.
  6. Follow the locals to authentic restaurants that also happen to be less expensive.
  7. Consider a vacation rental or a hostel rather than a higher-priced hotel—then buy groceries to cook in your kitchen.
