American University clinched its first-ever bid to the NCAA Tournament as a Division I school by knocking off Patriot League rival Colgate, 52-46, today in the lowest scoring championship game in league history. AU students and alumni stormed the court following the buzzer. Eagles guard Garrison Carr played all 40 minutes, scored 17 points, and was named tournament  MVP, reports AP.

Colgate was trying to get back to the tournament for the first time in 12 years and was led by Kyle Roemer's 17 points. AU Coach Jeff Jones was moved to tears saying "they've waited so long and endured a lot of disappointments," referring to the school's alumni, who had seen the Eagles lose the title game three times since 2001.
