4 FBI Agents Among Injured in Pakistan Blast

(Newser) – Four FBI agents were among the dozen hurt in a bomb attack at an Islamabad cafe this weekend, CNN reports. The agents were caught in the blast when an explosive device was tossed over a wall surrounding the outdoor restaurant, popular among Westerners and journalists. The FBI says that the four remain "slightly injured," although at least one is en route to London for surgery.

Pakistani government officials laid responsibility for the attack, which left one woman dead, on al Qaeda- and Taliban-affiliated militants based in Pakistan's northwest tribal regions. The agents were in Pakistan to investigate a prior bomb attack in Lahore, but whether the FBI agents were the target of the bombing remains an open question. Today in Pakistan the new Parliament is expected to convene, with a new government hostile to Pervez Musharraf set to take office.

"The whole leadership was saved," said Pakistan's interior minister.

    Pakistan PM Escapes Convoy Attack Three days before Pakistan is to elect a new president, PM Yousuf Gilani escaped an assassination attempt on his caravan outside Islamabad, the BBC reports. No injuries were reported, officials said, citing “robust and comprehensive security measures,” but CNN reports it's unclear whether Gilani was present in the motorcade. Gilani was on his way to Rawalpindi, a military town where former PM Benazir Bhutto was assassinated in December.

    Pakistan Aided Kabul Embassy Attack: US American intelligence has determined that members of Pakistan's powerful spy agency helped to plan July's bombing of the Indian embassy in Kabul, reports the New York Times. US authorities based their findings on intercepted messages between the attackers and Pakistani intelligence officers. American officials also obtained new evidence that the Pakistanis have provided information to militants, helping them to escape ahead of US air strikes.
