3 Still Missing in Crane Collapse

(Newser) – Two construction workers and a visitor in town for St. Patrick's Day are still missing after the collapse of a construction crane Saturday destroyed a New York townhouse and damaged other nearby buildings. Rescue services yesterday used dogs, heat-sensing devices, and microphones to search for the victims in the wreckage, with diminishing optimism. City officials also began removing parts of the 19-story crane’s boom apparatus yesterday.

Other teams were busy securing buildings, 18 of which have been vacated. Dozens of people were injured and at least four killed in the accident, though one man was rescued from Fubar, a bar in one of the crushed buildings. The owner of the bar said he told his father, “'If this thing ever fell it would take out a whole block.’”
