British Man Is Suspect in Kidnapping

Posted May 15, 07 6:26 AM CDT in Crime & Courts World

(Newser) – Police searching for a four-year-old British girl missing on a family vacation in Portugal have named a 33-year-old British expat as a suspect. Robert Murat lives less than 150 metres from where Madeleine McCann vanished 12 days ago, the Guardian reports. Murat was questioned for more than 16 hours yesterday, and then released.

Police searched the villa where he lives with his mother, and drained the pool. Murat's mother set up a seafront stall appealing for information about Madeleine's disappearance, saying she felt some people might not be comfortable giving tips to police. British business figures and celebrities have pledged over $5 million in reward money for the girl's return.
