It's an extraterrestrial weapon of sorts: An American company is turning a famous chunk of meteorite into a gun. “It’s both romantic and fascinating to imagine that this meteor traveled across the heavens for 4 billion years before landing on Earth and is now being transformed into Cabot pistols,” Guns.com quotes an announcement from Pennsylvania gun manufacturer Cabot. CNN reports the company is making a pair of pistols out of a 77-pound piece of the Gibeon meteorite, which struck the Earth 4.5 billion years ago and was discovered nearly 200 years ago in Namibia.

So far, Cabot has only managed to make the grips for the .45-caliber pistols, and founder Rob BiaNchin says working with the meteorite is like "cutting a rare diamond," CNN reports. "We were not sure it was possible, but we have passed the critical stage of construction and we are confident these will be a fully functional set of left and right-handed mirror image pistols," BiaNchin says. According to OutdoorHub, "the Big Bang Pistol Set" will likely be the first guns made from a meteorite. Cabot plans to auction the pistols off next year, and experts believe they could fetch as much as $1 million each, CNN reports. (This family made its view of guns clear in their Christmas card.)
