(Newser) – Hamas and Fatah have brokered a truce after two days of intense factional fighting that left 9 dead and 30 wounded. The Palestinian government has deployed its entire security force to the Gaza strip in an effort to maintain peace, but, the BBC observes, sporadic fighting continued Monday.

Interior Minister Hani Qawasmi, an independent, resigned yesterday, leaving PM Ismail Haniya to take personal control of the security effort. The battle between the sects has claimed 400 lives since Hamas won control of parliament after Israel withdrew from Gaza in 2005.

(NEWSER) - Palestine's rival factions, Hamas and Fatah, say they've finally agreed on a deal for a unified government, hoping to present a united front in their negotiations with Israel. Of course, they said the same thing last spring . That deal hit the rocks because the sides couldn't agree on a prime minister, but now they've agreed to allow Fatah President Mahmoud Abbas to at least temporarily lead an interim government, the New York Times reports. President urges diplomatic solution to nuclear crisis

(AP) - President Barack Obama said today he does not think Israel has decided whether to attack Iran over its disputed nuclear program, a standoff that has the Middle East on edge. The president sought to assure allies and foes alike that the United States was working in lockstep with Israel to solve the crisis, "hopefully diplomatically." Obama's comments came as Israel's major allies in the West are working hard to talk it out of a unilateral military strike on Iran's nuclear facilities, arguing forcefully that an attack ultimately would only strengthen the regime in Tehran. Israel Frees Another 550 Palestinians

Release follows clash at internment compound

(NEWSER) - Israel has set free another 550 Palestinian prisoners, completing the deal that secured the release of captured soldier Gilad Shalit . Thousands gathered at the former home of Yasser Arafat to celebrate alongside Palestinian officials. Most prisoners were directed to the West Bank; some 41 were sent to Gaza, and a handful were released to east Jerusalem and Jordan. The International Red Cross assisted in the operation, Israel said. Panetta to Israel: 'Just Get to the Damn Table'

Defense Secretary says military action should be 'last resort, not the first'

(NEWSER) - Leon Panetta delivered a harsh rebuke to Israel yesterday, saying that it needed to take steps to end its increasing isolation in the Middle East—starting with reviving peace talks with the Palestinians. “Just get to the damn table,” Panetta said at a pro-Israel forum in Washington, according to Reuters . “The problem right now is we can’t get ‘em to the damn table, to at least sit down and begin to discuss their differences.” More»
