Detroit Mayor Rejects Call for Resignation

Posted Mar 18, 08 4:55 PM CDT in Politics

(Newser) – Detroit's beleaguered mayor says he'll stick around, even though the City Council voted today to to call for his resignation. A nonbinding resolution asking Kwame Kilpatrick to step down passed 7-1, the Detroit Free Press reports. "My reaction is, OK, now since it's over, it has no effect, it's not binding, let's get back to work," Kilpatrick said.

The council cited 33 reasons Kilpatrick should go, including hiding the truth and ineffective governance. He's under fire for testifying under oath that he didn't have an affair with his now-ex-chief of staff, despite incriminating text messages that suggest otherwise. “There is an overwhelming and growing sentiment amongst citizens of Detroit that the City Council should stand firm against Mayor Kilpatrick and seek his resignation," said the resolution.
