Americans Blame War for Economic Woes: Poll

Posted Mar 19, 08 1:31 PM CDT in Business US    Editor's Choice

(newser) – The Iraq war and the current economic crisis aren’t unrelated issues in the minds of most Americans, a CNN poll finds. 71% said the war, which began five years ago today, helped cause the economic storm. Just 32% support the mission, with 61% saying the new president should withdraw most troops “within a few months of taking office.”

Two economists recently wrote that the war would ultimately cost $3 trillion, and the fallout would lead to the worst downturn since the Great Depression. “Others will have to work out the geopolitics,” they said, “but the economics here are clear.” President Bush said that figure is exaggerated: “I think the economy is down because we built too many houses."
