Official China Paper: 'Crush' Tibet Protests

Posted Mar 22, 08 8:27 AM CDT in World    Most Covered

(newser) – The newspaper of China’s ruling party has called for a move to “resolutely crush” Tibet’s protests against the government, the AP reports. “We must see through the secessionist forces' evil intentions” and maintain “social stability,” said the People’s Daily. Meanwhile, Beijing has asked people to turn in the “most wanted” protesters. The calls to action continue a government crackdown on Tibetan protests which turned to riots.

Beijing now says 22 were killed in Lhasa protests, but Tibet’s government claims 80 died there. Echoing House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Republican presidential candidate John McCain yesterday condemned China’s efforts to quell the protests. “There must be respect for human rights,” he said, calling government action “mistreatment that is not acceptable with the conduct of a world power.”
