Striving for Playoff Berth, Leafs Edge Sens

(Newser) – Struggling to reach the playoffs, the Maple Leafs were determined to wrest two points from the Senators, and battled accordingly. The 5-4 Toronto victory was decided early in the third period with two quick goals, and secured when the Leafs killed a power play with 87 seconds remaining, reports the Globe and Mail. Elsewhere in the league of pucks and blades:

  • Tomas Vokoun stopped 35 shots to secure a 4-2 win, and continued post-season possibilities for Florida, while dropping Tampa Bay into a tie with the Kings for last place in the league.
  • All Anaheim needed was two goals from Teemu Selanne to secure a 2-1 win over the floundering Coyotes, thanks to 30 saves from backup goalie Jonas Hiller.

    Selanne Scores 2 Goals to Lift Ducks by Kings Teemu Selanne scored two goals, including the game-winner with 13:32 to play, and the Anaheim Ducks beat the Los Angeles Kings 4-3 last night. Selanne fired a wrist shot from the left circle past Kings goalie Dan Cloutier to break a 3-3 tie. Joe DiPenta and Ryan Getzlaf also scored and Jean-Sebastien Giguere stopped 28 shots for the Ducks, who won six of eight against their rivals this season. More »

    Senators Get Much-Needed Win Antoine Vermette scored three goals and the Ottawa Senators moved within a point of wrapping up a playoff berth with an 8-2 win over the Toronto Maple Leafs tonight. The Senators, who scored three short-handed goals, can clinch a playoff spot with at least one point Friday night when they close out the regular season at home to Boston. More »

  • Huet Pays Dividends Again for Capitals

    Trading for Cristobal Huet paid off again for the Washington Capitals tonight, reports the Associated Press. Huet recorded his second shutout for the Caps and 17th of his career by blanking the Florida Panthers, 4-0, making 32 saves. It was Huet's fourth shutout of the season.   • Caps Grab OT Win, Remain in Playoff Chase

    The Capitals got the two points they needed tonight, but the Lightning didn’t give them up without a fight. Alexander Semin got Washington through regulation and Tomas Fleischmann won it for them in overtime, reports the AP.
