If it seems to you as if Blac Chyna came out of nowhere to enter into a whirlwind relationship with Rob Kardashian, get engaged to him, and get pregnant with his baby, you must read BuzzFeed's amazing, extensive piece on Chyna. Born Angela Renée White and soon to become Angela Kardashian, she rose from a working-class childhood to become a well-known stripper boosted into the mainstream spotlight via a Drake lyric. She then, in an apparently very strategic and calculated fashion, built her own brand, following, and fame. Along the way, she became first friends and then enemies with the Kardashian-Jenner clan, through her relationship with rapper Tyga. While they were together, Chyna and Kim Kardashian were buds; after Tyga left Chyna for Kylie Jenner, things went sour.
But Chyna ultimately, and completely awesomely, emerged victorious, snagging the only male Kardashian and turning him back from his stint as a depressed, overweight recluse. And now that she's having his baby, she's a part of the Kardashian clan for keeps, just like Scott Disick. All of this is made particularly delicious by the fact that the Kardashians (who have since, apparently resentfully, begun to accept Chyna's presence in their lives) are often accused of appropriating black culture and "stealing" men, particularly black men. They "got beat at their own game by a black woman. And not just any black woman, but a video vixen who was never supposed to see the inside of the country clubs the Kardashians frequented growing up," writes Sylvia Obell. Her entire piece is worth a read. (Baby bump photo here.)
