A woman has been charged with her twin's murder after allegedly driving an SUV off a seaside cliff in Maui. Police say Alexandria Duval, 37, was driving a Ford Explorer that went through a rock wall, plunging 200 feet onto rocks on May 29. She was flown to a hospital in critical condition, while her passenger, sister Anastasia Duval, was pronounced dead at the scene, reports the AP. Prosecutors say the crash was no accident. Witnesses saw the twins arguing in the SUV with "the passenger pulling the hair of the driver, who appeared to be in a rage," per KITV. One witness says Alexandria then accelerated into the rock wall from a dead stop, per KHON. Vehicle records show she made no attempt to brake, investigators say. Authorities add Alexandria Duval was attempting to flee Hawaii when she was arrested Friday on second-degree murder charges.
Her lawyer, however, says she was only "making plans to return home to attend her sister's funeral." He adds his client—who has pleaded not guilty to murder and is being held without bail—"did not try to harm herself or the person she most loved and was closest to in the world," and the accident was only a "heart-shattering" tragedy. Hawaii News Now reports the crash was just "the latest twist in the bizarre lives of the twins." They opened two yoga studios in Florida as Alison and Ann Dadow, but suddenly closed both in 2014. They resurfaced in Utah where they claimed bankruptcy, then appeared in Hawaii a few months ago apparently having changed their names. They were arrested for disorderly conduct and terroristic threatening on Christmas Eve, posted bail, but did not attend a hearing, leading to warrants for their arrest.
